Homework 1

 

Each student in CSCI100B has been assigned one topic based on the topics in Chapters 1 and 2 of the textbook: “Computers: Tools for an Information Age” by Capron and Johnson.  Use the textbook and the Internet to research your topic and write an essay (between 200 and 400 words) using Microsoft Word, on your topic. Your essay should be saved as Topic1.doc, Topic2.doc etc, depending on your topic number. If you are not sure of your topic number, email your instructor: adawson@coquitlamcollege.com, or inspect the HW1.doc document on the network in CSCI100B\Week02\. Make sure that your name and the Topic title is shown at the top of your essay.  Include at least one picture in your document related to your topic.

 

This homework is due at the start of class (Week 3 Class 2: i.e. Wed 19th January 2005). You should save a copy of your homework file to the C:\temp folder of a computer in Room 6, and then save a copy to the instructor’s folder when requested to do so.

  2. Computer Software – what is it? Gives examples of. 
  3. What is The Central Processing Unit?
  4. What are computer viruses and how are they spread?
  5. What is a supercomputer and how might it be used?
  6. What is a mainframe computer and how might it be used?
  7. Explain how computers might be used in business.
  8. What is the difference between a database and a spreadsheet application?
  9. What is the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW)?
  10.  How do CD-ROMs store data?
  11.  What is RAM?
